Soul Silver: How do EV values, base values work?

I just recently bought soul silver for the DS. But I have absolutely no idea how Ev values, base values, and all the other logistics of training pokemon work (besides experience points). Could someone please help me to understand this, I want to be able to fight on a competitive level with my team.

Very handy guide to EVs and the like. Also check out the other topics on the board, they're all very helpful.|||Everytime you defeat a pokemon, they yield a certian amount of Effort Points in one of the 6 stats (HP, ATK, DEF, S.ATK S.DEF, SPD)





At level 100 4 Effort points = 1 Stat point, you can only allocate a maximum of 255 per stat and a maximum of 510 points per pokemon.





Equiping a Macho Brace will double all EV Gains, If a pokemon has Pokerus it also doubles the gain (The 2 effects stack so you can have a x4 multiplyer)





In order to get the most out of your pokemon, EV training them to increase their main stats (For example you'd want to give Gyrados ATK EVs because that's his most powerful stat and it would add 63 points from 252 ATK EVs)





So by an amount of farming you can make the strongest possible team.|||Evs basically give you a boost in hp, atk, def, sp.atk, sp.def, and speed





let's assume zapdos always has 200 speed at level 100, but if you give 252 Evs in speed in zapdos its speed will change from 200 to let's say 237.





You can distribute ONLY 510 EV's





the highest you can give for one stat is 252 ( ex. 252 for speed is the highest you can give)





4 EV's is what is needed to make a change in stats (atk, def, speed, etc.)





When you battle pokemon some give different Ev's
