An acid has a pH %26lt; 7, and a base has a pH %26gt;7.


7 is neutral.





A weak acid always exists as an equilibrium in solution:


HC2H3O2 %26lt;--%26gt; H+ + C2H3O2-


*This is acetic acid which can also be shown as HAc


Strong acids completely dissociate in soln, meaning that there is no fully formed HCl molecule (it only exists as H+ and Cl-):


HCl --%26gt; H+ + Cl-





In solns with a high pH (basic), a buffer will form...for example:


HAc + OH- --%26gt; H20 + Ac-


A buffer system helps to prevent a drastic change in pH, when the number of moles of HAc exceeds the number of moles of OH-, the buffer is ineffective, so the pH skyrockets,





In solns with a low pH (acidic), nothing fancy like a buffer happens...oh well.|||Acid = PH level %26gt; 7


Base = PH level %26lt; 7





If a weak acid is in a solution and has a PH of like 7.5, it wont do anything to your skin, for example.





If you have acid in solution at, say, 14, it will go right through your skin, easy.





Also, it is much better to be burned by acid than a base. Acid will eat through skin but cant get through fat; a base will go straight through your arm.
