Can the base e have a negative value?

When I use the quadratic formula to factor x^2 + 2x - e^8

for example:

-1+square_root(2-4e^8).

Can e really be a negative base like in -4e^8?|||If you are talking bases, you cannot have 4e^8 because 4 %26gt; e

Better would be e^(8+ln4)

Other than that, negative bases are fine. It is just a point on the numberline. It has the same value whether base 2, base 10 or base e.
