What will happen if you mix Acid and Base with the same pH value?

The pH value is 8.|||What??? At first, it looked like you were mixing an acid and a base and both of them were to have the same pH. That of course would be impossible unless the acid and the base were both water and the pH they both had was 7.

Instead, perhaps you mean that you are going to mix an acid with a substance with a ph of 8, and a base with a substance with a pH of 8.

pH is one way of giving the concentration of a substance since pH is computed from the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration. Therefore the change in pH will be related to the volume of the pH 8 mystery substance.

But, in general we could safely say that combining an acid with our mystery pH substance would lower the pH and combining a more concentrated base would raise the pH.

======== Follow up =========

Hi, I just noticed that you changed the parameters of the question, ha, ha. If you are neutralizing an acid with a base it really won't make much difference what the original pH's are. If the acid and base are both strong, then the pH when neutralization occurs will be 7. But it depends on the relative strengths of the acid and base.

It really boils down to hydrolysis of the salt produced by the neutralization of the acid and base. Whether the salt hydrolyzes to make an acid or basic solution depends on the relative strengths of the acid and base.

If the salt come from ....

a strong acid and a strong base, the salt is neutral

a strong acid and a weak base, the salt is acidic

a weak acid and a strong base, the salt is basic

a weak acid and a weak base, you can't easily tell. It depends on the relative strengths of the weak acid and weak base.|||They will neutralize each other IF they're present in equal quantities.

Even if this is not the case a chemical reaction will occur and a salt will be formed. Some salts disolved in water will result in a lower than 7 pH, and vice versa|||Then you arent mixing an acid and a base, you are mixing two bases. By definition, acids are chemicals with pH value less than 7.|||it's impossible to have an acid and a base be the same pH. but i doubt anything spectacular will happen either way.|||Neutralize.|||there can be no acid or base with the same ph values.. so sorry mate... u r mistaken!
